WHERE IS L'ANSE, MICHIGAN?
L'Anse is a small village and the county seat of Baraga County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It sits at the head of L'Anse Bay, an arm of Keweenaw Bay on Lake Superior, giving the community an attractive waterfront setting.
The village is along U.S. Highway 41, about 30 miles south of Houghton and roughly 65 miles northwest of Marquette.

According to the 2020 U.S. Census, L'Anse had a population of 1,874, down from 2,011 in 2010.
L'ANSE, MICHIGAN HISTORY
The L'Anse area was home to Ojibwe (Chippewa) people before Europeans arrived. Native communities used Keweenaw Bay for fishing, hunting, travel, and trade.
The Ojibwe called the area Gichi-wiikwedong. Today, part of L'Anse lies within the L'Anse Indian Reservation of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.
L'Anse Canyon FallsFrench missionaries and fur traders were among the first Europeans to visit the region. Father René Menard, a Jesuit missionary, arrived in the Keweenaw Bay area in 1660.
During the 1800s, fur trading posts and missions became established around the bay.
In 1836, Peter Crebassa became a representative of the American Fur Company and operated a trading post near present-day L'Anse.
Methodist missionaries were already active nearby, and Father Frederic Baraga established a Catholic mission at Assinins in 1843.
L'Anse Historic Aerial ViewEarly non-Native settlers included government blacksmith Daniel Brockway, carpenters, missionaries, traders, and lumbermen.
L'anse was built and initially intended in the early 1870s to be a major port and shipping hub for iron ore. The town developed rapidly after the Marquette, Houghton and Ontonagon Railroad reached the bay in 1872.
The railroad built a large 6,000-ton iron ore dock there, but the economic Panic of 1873 halted those shipping dreams, and the dock ultimately burned down in 1896.
Lumbering later became especially important, with the Ford Motor Company eventually operating lumber interests in the area.

Today L'Anse remains the governmental and commercial center of Baraga County.
Its downtown is small and walkable, with L'Anse Waterfront Park, a marina, views across Keweenaw Bay, and nearby Falls River waterfalls adding to its appeal.
L'Anse DowntownShopping is modest but interesting for a community this size.
The Village Gift Shop features locally made gifts and work by Michigan artists, while The Mercantile Exchange offers antiques, vintage items, and consignment merchandise.
Visitors also have several casual places to eat, including the old-fashioned Nite Owl Cafe downtown and the well-known Hilltop Restaurant along US-41.
L'Anse isn't a major shopping destination, but its combination of local shops, restaurants, Lake Superior scenery, and small-town Upper Peninsula character makes it an enjoyable stop on the way to or from the Keweenaw Peninsula.
